The Cunner, or bergal as it is locally known, is in the wrasse family and is related to the Tautog. They are a small species, growing only to about 15 inches in length. They have protruding canine teeth which they use to steal baits off the lines of unsuspecting anglers.

The meat of the Cunner has little food value.
